About Us

Our History

As recorded in the November 25, 2001, book celebrating the 94th Anniversary of Greater Union Baptist Church the Church was organized Monday, November 25, 1907, by the Reverend Joe Dodson and was named Union Baptist.  It was located in the Fairview community of Chase City, Virginia. In 1908 Reverend Dodson built a small place of worship in Fairview where worship services were held the third Sunday of each month.

On Saturday, July 7, 1917, Church Trustees Singie Richards, Sam Daniel, Chase Barnes, N.C. Bagby and Ephriam Mason, paid four hundred and fifty dollars ($450.00) to E.W. Hudgins and Lucy Morton Hudgins for the tract of land on which our present church was built. In the beginning the entrance of the church faced what is now known as Boyd Street. As the landscape of the town changed, the church changed its entrance to face North Main Street. We have no actual date as to when the church was built.

Since 1907 a number of ministers have been the shepherd of the flock, namely: The Honorables Joe Dodson, Bagby, Gooch, Ruffin, Dailey, Burton, Lewis, Crawley, Shelton, Ritchie, Kizzie, Fogg, Terry, Jr., Graves, Sr., John K. Hargrove, Sr., Linda B. Goode and, Dr. Kendall J. Bartley, Sr., and our current Pastor-Elect Reverend Dr. Michael S. Evans. The name of the church was changed from Union Baptist to Greater Union Baptist during the pastorate of Reverend Ritchie. He wanted to differentiate between our church and another Union Baptist that he pastored.

At the writing of this summary our church celebrated its 117th Church Anniversary Monday, November 25, 2024. In 3 years, Thursday, November 25, 2027 we will celebrate 200 years, our bicentennial!
